Logic today has become a broad study of information flow and reasoning, from its traditional home of philosophy and mathematics to linguistics, computer science, and even the social sciences and cognitive science. Modern logicians live at a crossroads between many disciplines, as can be seen in new initiatives like the strategic research program LogiCCC of the European Community.
While logic in China has a long distinguished history going back to Antiquity, its modern participation worldwide is only beginning. Chinese logicians are joining the international community in growing numbers, bringing fresh talents and fresh cultural perspectives that will no doubt resonate widely as the trend continues.
Our workshop today is meant to show these developments, on the occasion of a special celebration, the successful conclusion of a Translations Project for the work of Johan van Benthem. He is a frequent visitor in China (Beijing, Guangzhou) who has participated in forging many links with China, including student and staff exchanges, and the new LORI conference series, whose last instalment in Chongqing featured a special day 'LogiCCC Meets China. While paying special attention to this Translation Project, the aims of the Workshop are broader, and in particular, the Saturday lectures will address the following themes:
(a) the current interdisciplinary position of logic in China,
(b) assessing the interface of logic and philosophy today,
(c) broader cultural implications of cooperation in the
field of logic between China and the international world.
The Workshop continues on Sunday with working sessions on major research themes by mostly younger researchers, with a view to sharing results and brainstorming about future collaborations, inside China and internationally.
